Things to Know to Get Pregnant with Twins

Many people are fascinated with the idea of having twins. It can be amazing to think that one pregnancy can result with more than one child. Recently, the numbers of multiple birth pregnancies that are occurring around the world are increasing rapidly. It is a possibility that there is an increased number of twin births, due to the rise of fertility drugs, but there are also many other reasons that this increase may be seen.

1. How are twins made?

Twins are conceived in a couple of different ways. For example, there is more than one egg that is typically released at the time of ovulation. If more than one of these eggs is fertilized during this time, you will find that you are pregnant with fraternal twins. One way that this can occur is through fertility drugs, but this is not always the case. If one egg is fertilized but it splits in two, identical twins will be born instead. This can also have happened due to fertility drugs or caused for natural reasons.

In vitro fertilization can sometimes help twins to be born because more than one fertilized egg is implanted back to the uterus. While it is believed that not all of the embryos that are implanted will produce a pregnancy, there are circumstances in which they do.

2. How to become pregnant with twins

There are a number of things that can increase your chances of becoming pregnant with twins. However, it is important to realize that there is no guarantee that you will be able to have a multiple birth pregnancy and the following items will only increase your chances slightly.

  • Have a large family
Statistics have shown that those who have many children have a higher chance of becoming pregnant with twins. However, this will take some time before a twin birth is produced and it may be difficult for parents to consider having a larger amount of children than they had originally planned.
  • Fertility drugs
One of the common side effects of taking fertility drugs is an increased chance of having twins. While this chance is not increased significantly, there are many women who become pregnant with twins or multiple births after they begin taking fertility drugs. However, many facilities will not prescribed these unless you have a medical need or are having a difficult time becoming pregnant first place.
  • Eat more yams
Yams are believed to contain a component that can help increase your chances of hyperovulation. One area in West Africa adds this to their regular diet and have an increased number of twins throughout the area. In fact, there are more twins born in this area than anywhere else in the world and scientists have finally narrowed down the cause to the diet of the women who live here.
  • Wait until your older
Research has shown that women who are over the age of 45 have a greater chance of becoming pregnant with twins. However, since our body ages and becoming pregnant becomes more difficult at this age, waiting until you are past the age of 45 to attempt to become pregnant can be dangerous because there is a chance that you will no longer be able to become pregnant at this point.
  • Add some weight
Studies have also shown that women who have a BMI that is greater than 30 have an increased chance of becoming pregnant with twins. However, it also makes it more difficult to become pregnant in first place and women who are overweight can experience a higher risk of pregnancy related illnesses and complications.

3. Conclusion

Many of the women who have twins simply have them because they regularly occur throughout their family history. This is one of the most common reasons that twins are born and is impossible to control for couples who are looking to become pregnant with twins.

It is important to realize that having twins comes with by a bit of responsibility and challenges. Not only are you being forced to care for two children at one time, there are also additional risks involved when giving birth and throughout the pregnancy. Often times, twins are born through C-sections and are premature.
While there is no guarantee that you will be able to become pregnant with twins, the above items will help you increase your chances significantly. It is important to make sure that you are taking care of your health while you are pregnant with twins and that you are even more cautious than you would be with a typical pregnancy.
