Woman Born without Female Reproductive Organs Gives Birth to Twins
The Short of It
At 19 years old, Hayley Haynes, of London, England, went to the doctor because she had passed the age of puberty and had not yet gotten her period. To her shock and dismay, doctors told her that while she had always felt "normal," she was missing all of her female reproductive organs, such as her ovaries, Fallopian tubes and uterus. Yet, the mother with "no womb" recently gave birth to twins.
The Lowdown
Specialists informed Hayley that she was born with XY chromosomes, meaning she was technically male, and they diagnosed her with androgen insensitivity syndrome. Her entire life was turned upside down.
Hayley eventually married her childhood friend Sam. They both knew they wanted a family together. Hope appeared in 2009 when a doctor discovered that Hayley had a very small uterus, only a few millimeters, but it was there. She couldn't conceive naturally, but with IVF, there was a possibility she could grow a baby in her womb.
After hormone treatment, Hayley started IVF treatment in 2011. They could only afford one round of IVF. Only two of the 13 eggs harvested were viable for implantation, and it was successful. Hayley became pregnant with twin girls.
The Upshot
The couple got their happy ending and welcomed their miracle twins on Christmas Eve, when Hayley gave birth to Darcey and Avery.
"Becoming a mother was the single most amazing moment of my life. When I held the babies in my arms for the first time, I was overwhelmed. I had spent nine years coming to terms with the fact this might never happen, but in that moment all the pain just washed away," Hayley told Good Housekeeping.
